The museum showcases stunning American art from the 17th- through 21st-centuries, contemporary art, international textiles and costumes, art from Central and South America, the Pacific and Africa. They also always have amazing special exhibits.

You can save a bit on ticket when you order online. And you can upgrade your tickets when you order if you’d like to enjoy one of the special exhibits or take the audio tour.

de Young San FranciscoThe de Young museum also offers a few free admission days. There are deals and freebies when you take public transportation, for BofA cardholders, WSJ members, military, and more. Children 12 and under always get in free. Check out the options below.

DEAL: de Young Museum Discount Tickets — Best price, no fees from this source. You can show either a paper or electronic voucher with this deal. As a bonus, these tickets to the de Young include same-day general admission to the Legion of Honor.

ALTERNATIVE: de Young Museum “Any Day” Tickets Online — $9.50, Senior $6, Youth $5 plus $2 fees. Children 12 and under get in free. This ticket source sells Any Day tickets valid whenever you decide to go until March 31, 2016. This allows you to change your mind at the last minute. (By comparison, when you get them online elsewhere you have to choose your date and stick with it.)

FREE DAYS: Free Days at de Young Museum are …

  • FREE First Tuesday — The museum’s free admission days or the first Tuesdays of every month. Special exhibition fees still apply. Go early and expect a crowd.
  • FREE First Weekends — via the Museums On Us program, the first full weekend of every month is free when you show your Bank of America or Merrill Lynch credit or debit card. (Only the cardholder gets in free.) Special exhibition fees still apply. Also, they close the doors when they reach capacity.
  • MILITARY: General admission is free for all veterans and active military personnel on Veterans Day.

WHEN: Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:30am to 5pm; Open until 8:45pm on Friday. On July 4, December 24, December 31, and January 9, the museum is open until 4 pm.  Closed most Mondays and closed January 1, Thanksgiving Day, and December 25. All this is subject to change.

SAVVY TIPS: To help make your visit a little savvier …

  1. Parking — Most convenient parking is at The Music Concourse Garage, but it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. If you arrive early you can sometimes find street parking nearby.
  2. Alternate Parking/Shuttle — You can park farther away and take the free Golden Gate Park Shuttle to the museum, which arrives at 14 different popular stops {Map} every 15–20 minutes from 9am until 6pm. Find GG Park parking with free shuttle access at:
    • Ocean Beach (John F. Kennedy Dr. & the Great Highway) — Free.
    • UCSF Medical Center Garage (Irving St. & 3rd Ave) — $3 per hour, max fee $24.
  3. Shopping & Dining — The museum showcases art books, artisan goods and gifts at Museum Stores on all three levels. You can also grab a bite at the Museum Café, featuring classic American and European menu items using local seasonal ingredients.

      Yes, unfortunately special exhibits are extra, even on the free days. That’s why I say that in the first sentence of this post. But I’ll keep the Free Day info up for people who still want to get into the museum for free. I’ve added a note lower down on the page so other people won’t miss it.
