When to use them, when to skip them.

Even locals like to use tourist discounts, when they’re good ones. Most of the great museum and attraction offers featured on Savvy Cities are available À la carte, but when you want to visit more than one venue over a few weeks, combo passes may be just the thing, especially the new and improved discount passes. Take a second look at the updated tourist passes that help you save on just the attractions and activities you want to visit.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Are attraction discount passes savvy or sorry? Anyone who looked into these in the past might just take a pass on the tourist pass. Most offered more choices of activities and attractions than we could possibly do in a short time. We felt pressured to play or pay. Plus they added shipping charges, and you had to order in advance and hope they came in time. Sorry, no.

How have tourist passes they changed? The new discount cards appeal to both visitors and locals, planners and procrastinators. Want to save around 20 percent or more on just a couple of activities you can do starting today and ending as much as a month from now? No problem. The Go City cards now give you that option to custom build your own cards. You can order them online, and just show your confirmation on your smart phone when you go. The CityPASS has also gotten easier to use, and they feature a smaller number of just the places you’d want to go over nine days. The savings are big. And you can skip the ticket line in most cases.

What if you’re a local? I’ve been using discount combo passes here in San Francisco to catch up with museum exhibits, take the kiddos to theme park, and to entertain guests visiting from out of town. For locals, the best options are the Go Select passes that let you choose as few as two attractions or activities to do over a month’s time, and you’ll save 20 percent or more on each. Check it out and tell us what you think.
