Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra celebrate the Stan Kenton Centennial on February 18, 2012. Discount tickets for the event are available for half off from the popular NYC discount ticket source listed below. This event is part of the Music of the Masters Series at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater.
During the 1940s and ’50s — a time when jazz oscillated between cool, hot, and hard bop — bandleader Stan Kenton’s sound was considered “progressive.” While other big bands were starting to break up, Kenton introduced the world to his radical and hugely successful new 40-piece orchestra, which featured such jazz stars as Lee Konitz. To celebrate Kenton’s centennial, Konitz joins the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis as they revisit the time when one jazz musician knew exactly where he was going: strictly forward.
